Don't delay treatment for chronic hip pain
It is important to seek help for hip pain, especially when it interrupts your life. Perhaps you were scheduled for hip replacement surgery, but it was postponed due to COVID-19. Or maybe you've just been reluctant to see a doctor until it seemed safe to you again.
Although you still need to protect yourself when you are away from home, you may be slowly returning to some of your activities and appointments. And taking care of your health should be at the top of the list.
Learn more about hip replacement surgery, including what to expect before and after, and how we are working to protect you when you are in our care.
Who Needs Hip Replacement Surgery?
Patients 65 and older are often good candidates for hip replacement surgery if they:
You continued to experience chronic pain even while sitting or sleeping
Exhausted all other forms of treatment
Maintained an active lifestyle
Total hip replacement surgery is not recommended for people who are overweight, tobacco smokers, or living with diabetes, as these factors can increase the chance of infection and complications after surgery.
What should I expect before and after surgery?
Once your medical team recommends surgery as an effective option for treating your chronic hip pain, your primary care provider or orthopedic specialist will work with you to ensure that hip replacement surgery is safe for you.
This may require tests to detect allergens that may be contained in the implants and used during the procedure. If you have an allergy to nickel, chromium, cobalt, or other metals, or to the cement used in surgery, special consideration is required as you may not be eligible for the procedure or may require different materials.
The surgery itself is a two-day inpatient procedure. The surgery usually lasts between one and two hours, with an additional two hours of preparation and recovery in the operating room. During your stay, you can count on your care team to provide you with compassionate and personalized care.
